I taught a long time offline before I ever considered, knew or thought about teaching online.  Online teaching is relatively a pretty new concept.  I think this is an area that will continue to grow and improve over time.  I have taken quite a few online classes and really love the idea.  Online learning works well for me.  I have already been to classes offline and I do think I prefer the online classroom.  Some classes are a combination of both online and offline learning.  Sometimes the teacher will have you meet face-to-face at first, go online for all of the rest of the classes except maybe one more or the very last session, and then reconvene.  Depending on which classes you are taking online, this can work out very well.

Usually teaching and learning online is more flexible than the regular traditional type of classroom.  Hours can be changed and rules are not as strict.  Some people fare better in this type of environment.

Communication, as in the regular classroom, is critical in the online situation.  Often it is one of the few assets available to you.  Ask questions often and encourage your students to do the same.  Instill wonder and curiosity in them,  and learning will inevitably follow.
